Daily Birdwatching Tours

Currently there are three main areas around the region that I travel too for my birdwatching tours although more sites are being discovered and in the future further options will be available. The three options are 'La Safor Region', 'Alicante Region', & 'Albacete Region' and each offer a unique range of bird species.

To view what can be seen and when go to the 'Bird List' pages (here).

La Safor Region

This is a full day starting at Oliva Marina, followed by Oliva/Pego Marshes, Val de Gallinera and the hills above Alcoy. These areas can give good mix of typical Spanish birds with resident species including lots of herons & egrets, Griffon Vultures Golden Eagles, Moustached & Cetti's Warblers, Kentish Plover, Audouin's & Western Yellow legged Gulls, Kingfisher, Purple Gallinule, Hoopoes, Spotless Starlings, and Serins . However depending on time of year species seen include Balearic & Cory's Shearwater, Squacco, Purple, & Night Herons, Little Bittern, Marbled Duck, Booted Eagle, Marsh Harrier, Osprey, various wader species, Sandwich & Whiskered Terns, Nightingale, Bee-eaters, Bluethroat, Water Pipit, Red necked Nightjar, Savi's Warbler etc.

Alicante Region

Alicante is about an hour's drive south of Oliva but well worth the journey with plenty of very good sites within a small distance making for easy birdwatching. The likely places to be visited will be the Santa Pola Headland, Clot de Galvany, Santa Pola Salinas, El Hondo Reserve, and the hills above Crevaillante and Jijona. Birds that can be seen here are too numerous to list, but the specialities include the globally endangered Marbled & White-headed Ducks, Greater Flamingos, Purple Gallinules, Mediterranean & Slender-billed Gulls, Bonelli's, Short-toed & Booted Eagles, Marsh & Montagu's Harriers, Temminck's Stint, Roller, Rufous Bushchat, Black & Black-eared Wheatear, Thekla & Lesser Short-toed Lark, & possibly Trumpeter Finch.

Albacete Region

We travel inland to Castilla la Mancha, around the towns of Bonete & Petrola where the massive agricultural fields dominate the landscape. This fantastic area hosts one of the worlds largest land birds, Great Bustard, a bird that always leaves a lasting impression when seen. Steppe species recorded in this area also include small numbers of breeding Little Bustard and Stone Curlew, resident Black-bellied & Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Great Spotted Cuckoo, lots of Calandra, Short-toed, Thekla & Crested Larks, Rock Sparrows, Red & Black Kite, Hen & Montagu's Harrier. As well as the plains there are also a couple of excellent lagoons that can hold a variety of ducks & waders, plus Greater Flamingos, Marsh Harrier, Eurasian & Great Reed Warblers.

Obviously 'time of year' is essential for seeing certain species so please do not hesitate to contact me for further information on what to expect during your visit. The tariff below gives the prices for individual days out however small discounts will be given to parties wanting to book more than one tour.

Due to the location of Oliva Rama Bed & Breakfast it would make an ideal base from which to stay and participate in any of the above options. Although as part of the package I would be willing to arrange pick-up and return from any destination around the area. Consequently the tariff below will have two prices, one for residents of the B & B, and one for non-residents.
