Valencian Short Break

1st - 7th April 2011

A short break to the Valencia Region will be full of surprises visiting many diverse areas interwoven with the concrete jungle that makes up the coastal strip of the Costa Blanca. Your stay will be at Oliva Rama Pension situated in the Spanish 'old town' of Oliva, it is our own guesthouse and provides an ideal base for reaching the areas we will be visiting. The break involves travelling to three distinct provinces - Valencia with it's wetlands, karst limestone valleys and coastal headlands, Alicante with it's salt pans, sandstone valleys and sierras also Albacete with it's agricultural steppe lands and inland lagoons.

Day 1 - A pick up from either Valencia or Alicante Airports we will kick-start your break with possibly a little local birdwatching before returning to our guesthouse. At a suitable time we will make our way back to Oliva Rama Pension where your room will be waiting along with a cool drink on the roof terrace, which could yield a bird or two from the extensive orange groves and hills behind the house where it is possible to get fantastic views of Serin, Spotless Starling, Sardinian Warbler, Hoopoe, White & Grey Wagtail.

Day 2 - Depending on time of year we may begin on the coast looking for species like Balearic & Cory's Shearwater's, Audouin's, Mediterranean & Yellow legged Gulls, Gannets, Razorbill, Sandwich Tern, Sanderling & Kentish Plover. Next we go to Oliva/Pego Marsh looking for the resident Moustached Warblers, Little & Cattle Egrets, Purple Gallinule, Kingfisher, Crested Larks, Cetti's Warblers and Zitting Cisticolas. Breeding species include Little Bittern, Night, Purple & Squacco Herons, Black winged Stilts, Whiskered Terns, Yellow Wagtails, Savi's, Eurasian Reed & Great Reed Warblers, Woodchat Shrikes, and Turtle Doves. During winter & early spring flocks of finches, larks, sparrows & buntings feed in the paddy fields and consequently Booted Eagles, Marsh & Hen Harriers, Common Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, and Peregrine Falcon are all seen on a regular basis. Recent rarities include Glossy Ibis, Sociable Plover, Marsh & Pectoral Sandpiper, Caspian Tern, & Snow Bunting. Next we drive up into the mountains through the Vall de Gallinera hopefully seeing it's resident Golden Eagles, Crag Martin, Cirl Bunting, and Red billed Chough. Breeding species include Golden Oriole, Wryneck, Woodchat Shrike, Rock Sparrow, Melodious Warbler, Black eared Wheatear and Turtle Doves. Finally we visit the hills behind Alcoy where we will see Griffon Vultures at close quarters and possibly Woodlark & Thekla Lark, Crested, Coal & Great Tit, Raven, Rock Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush and Crossbills. It is then back to the guesthouse to allow you time to reflect on the day's events and relax with a drink before you can sample one of Oliva's excellent local restaurants.

Day 3 - This day is in total contrast to the others with an early breakfast and drive into Castilla La Mancha. We will head straight for the Albacete region, where our target species are Great & Little Bustard, Black-bellied & Pin-tailed Sandgrouse, Stone Curlew, Calandra, Crested & Short toed Larks, Rock & Tree Sparrows. Apart from our target species there is always a chance of other classic species during the breeding season such as Great Spotted Cuckoo, Black-eared & Northern Wheatear, Red & Black Kite, Common Buzzard, Marsh & Montagu's Harrier, and the scarce Lesser Kestrel. Also there are the lagoons of Petrola & Higuela, which are both excellent for waders & wildfowl with recent tours finding species such as Ferruginous & Marbled Ducks, Pintail, Gull billed & Black Terns, Temminck's Stint, Wood & Curlew Sandpipers, Spotted Redshank, and Greater Flamingos. This area is fantastic all year round, in late autumn/winter there are various flooded fields, which hold good numbers of birds making for a great day out.

Day 4 - One day will be spent around the Alicante area in the south looking for many of it's resident and breeding speciality species. Along the coast in the late spring and summer are a few Rufous Bush Robins as well a good possibility of migrants such as Common Redstart, Pied Flycatcher, Wood, Bonelli's & Sub-alpine Warblers during passage season. Next we will visit the 'Clot de Galvany' a small wetland reserve with it's breeding White headed Ducks, Purple Gallinules, Iberian Green Woodpeckers, Little Owl, Southern Grey Shrike, Dartford & Sardinian Warblers  and the possibility of a Marbled Duck.  We then go the short distance to the 'Santa Pola Salinas', this large area of commercial saltpans hold several thousand Greater Flamingos, various species of gulls & terns, waders and wildfowl all year round. Again here anything can turn up with regular visitors like Great White Egret, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbill, Caspian Tern, & Osprey. After lunch we visit arguably the 'Valenciana Communitat' s premier bird reserve 'El Hondo', as well as some of the above species it also has breeding Roller, Montagu's Harrier, Lesser Short toed Larks, Collared Pratincole, and Little Bittern. Other species regularly seen in this area also includes Bearded Tit, Hobby, Glossy Ibis, and Temminck's Stint plus during passage periods significant numbers of wildfowl and waders can occur within the reserve. Depending on 'time of year' a meal will be taken at Finca Bonelli's Eagle above Crevillente, with it's resident pair of Bonelli's Eagles as well as Black Wheatears, Rock Bunting, Blue Rock Thrush, Alpine Swifts, Thekla Larks, & Raven.

Day 5 - Today we head north towards Valencia to visit the wetland sites of the Albufera de Valencia and Moro Marsh. Our day will start driving north to the extensive rice fields that surround Spain's second largest coastal freshwater lake - Albufera d'Valencia, where we hope to find many species of heron & egret including the locally scarce Great White Egret, plus Gull billed & Whiskered Terns, Yellow legged, Audouin's & Lesser Black backed Terns, Little Ringed Plovers, Black winged Stilts with a good chance of something rarer. Once we have negotiated the narrow roads through to Palomar (the home of Paella) we shall visit the small but excellent reserve of Raco d'Olla. Here we will enjoy near point blank views of nesting gulls & terns including gorgeous pink Slender billed Gulls doing their bizarre display. The pine trees surrounding the reserve should hold Firecrest, Short toed Treecreeper and Turtle Dove, with the constant possibility of a raptor overhead such as Booted Eagle or Osprey. This reserev has also recently held a few breeding pairs of Marbled Duck and there is a goodchance we shall find one of these elusive wildfowl. We shall then visit Moro Marsh the home of breeding Crested Coots amongst other excellent wetland species with breeding Little Bittern, Purple, Night & Squacco Herons, Collared Pratincole, Purple Gallinule, Common & Little Terns, Moustached, Savi's & Great Reed Warblers.

Day 6 - Depending on where your flight leaves from we shall return to one or two of the sites previously visited trying to locate any species we may have missed previously. Another option is to drive through to Denia (the next town south) looking for the resident Monk Parakeets, and then on to Cap de San Antoni looking for it's breeding Mediterranean Shags, Peregrine Falcons Black Wheatears, Blue Rock Thrush, Sardinian & Dartford Warblers. Whatever we decide your break will finish on a high and you will be go home having seen another fantastic area within Spain.

"What's been said"

Hi Jules, Many thanks for a great week. We both came home very happy with the lifers we amassed; and the juv Spanish Imperial Eagle was as good as a new one, to see it soaring above us for 20 mins plus was an unforgetable experience - the icing on the cake! Hopefully see you again soon A. Bates

Thankyou for your assistance during our brief stay, our task of finding our target birds would have been almost impossible without it. Mrs Sykes senior was a perfect and caring host, and we were made most welcome. We will definatley look at using your excellent expertise again if your are able.
Failed to locate birding area close to Gran Alicant, but a blind man with a chair leg could find the salinas alongside the N332, these added Grey Plover, Slender billed Gull, Greenshank, Greater Flamingo and Common Redshank to our trip list. You displayed a top rate ability to locate and identify birds, as well as being very good company for 9hrs when out for a proper full days birding.
Thankyou very much for a great two days, best of luck. Not withstanding the economic downturn, will ask to use your services again, if you will help us again! W. & S. Foster

Jules - Just a quick note at this stage to say thank you for such a wonderful holiday. It was just the break I'd hoped for and needed. The company and birdwatching was superb. D & H Clarke

Hi Jules - Many thanks for another wonderful trip; the Red-necked Nightjars were just sensational - bird of the trip, for me.  I've seen Honey Buzzards before but not 22 in one day!   So many quality moments packed into four superb days. Just itching to come back and get that Moustached Warbler! J. Thorogood

Hi mate, just letting you know we are home safe and well, and thanking you very much once again for a great time you showed us both birdwatching. Please thank Jill for us and also give her our love. I will keep in touch and we hope to join you again in the not too distant future. All the very best once again (even if you are from bloody Yorkshire!). T Wynn & C Pittaway

Brilliant area, great birds and excellent local knowledge from Jules, since he managed to find me all my target species. SUPERB. D Starkey

Jules many thanks, 110% effort & success on our short stay. We will be back for more. J & J Murray

We've had a fantastic time (again). It's always great to use your knowledge of the area, and the champagne was a lovely thought, thank you. G & G Smith

Thank-you once again for a great trip, and thanks for the photo's mate they look great in my report, could I be cheeky and asked for the other picture of Eagle owl that appears in your diary too. Best of luck for the trip or if I missed you and you've already been I hope it was a success.  Thank you once again as it was you that made it. J Starie

Just spent three and half days birding the area of southern Valencia with Julian as our guide, the area is excellent for birds with some superb sites, but what made the trip was the hospitality and warmth of Jules. As a tour guide he is excellent, with enthusiasm, patience, wonderful knowledge of the area and is excellent company to be with, I would highly recommend anyone to try a tour with him. D Taylor

Thank you for a wonderful holiday - the birds were amazing and your kindness & hospitality was much appreciated. This trip has surpassed all expectations, not only bird-wise but in how much we have enjoyed it. I think you have found your vocation and earned the 'good write up'. J Lowther & C Mckay
