Egypt-Red Sea Specialities

6th - 13th March           Cost - 1100 (inc flights)

Leader - Ken Shaw

This is a fairly unique birdwatching experience aimed at anyone wanting to improve their identification of some of the trickier species to be found along the Red Sea coastline. Our main base will in one of the many self contained resorts of Hurghada on an all-inclusive basis with a two night adventure to the extreme south of the country. Most of the week we will be dividing the time with seawatching, daily walks around the complex, and travelling to some of the birdwatching sites surrounding this coastal town including the golf course at El Gouna, Safaga Mangroves and the excellent local Water Treatment Plant.

Midweek we will journey south with stops en-route but our main aim will be to arrive at the Hamata Mangroves to try and find Goliath Heron, a very rare bird in the Western Palearctic. We will be spending the next two nights at the superb Ecolodge Diving Centre at Wadi Lahami, with full day heading further south to the Sudanese border town of Bir Shalatein, a known site for the enigmatic Lappet faced Vulture plus possibly other rare WP species.

This holiday will be a fairly intensive week with some fairly early starts for the best of the southbound migration but will be conducted in a very relaxed and light-hearted manner with two very knowledgable and experienced guides.

Day 1 :- Upon arrival at Hurghada Airport we will pick up the hire cars and make our way to the excellent Aladdin Beach Resort where after checking in we shall gather for refreshments at the beach bar and hopefully start our week with a few good birds that may include Osprey, Pied Kingfisher Western Reef Heron, White eyed & Sooty Gulls,  Lesser Crested & Caspian Terns. During this time Ken will go through the week's itinerary and ensure everyone is comfortable with the complex's layout and meal times. That evening will be first of the excellent buffet meals that will definitely cater for all tastes followed by a visit to one of the quieter bars for the daily log.

Days 2 & 3 :- We will regularly take a morning walk around the resort's grounds and local waste ground should produce our first migrants, which can occur in impressive numbers. We should find the ubiquitous Laughing Dove, Brown necked Ravens, Hooded Crows, White Wagtails, Sardinian Warblers, Bluethroats, Spanish & House Sparrows but we may also encounter Isabelline, Pied, Mourning, & Finsch's Wheatears, Red throated & Water Pipits, Eastern Olivaceous Warblers, Lesser Whitethroats and Nile Valley Sunbird. Further afield we will visit the Safaga Mangrove and it's nearby beaches here we have a possibility of finding the rare and sporadic African Collared Dove along with wetland species such as Western Reef & Little Egrets, Purple & Squacco Herons, Pintail, Redshank, Greenshank and Whimbrel. Along the coastline we shall stop at a few of the en-route beaches looking through wader, gull and tern flocks hoping to find Greater Sandplovers, Grey, Kentish & Ringed Plovers, Sanderling, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpipers, Little & Temminck's Stints, Lesser Crested Terns, Great Black headed, Slender billed & Western Yellow legged Gulls. We shall visit the Water Treatment Plant on the edge of Hurghada which is a little oasis on the edge of the desert on a couple of visits on our trip in January we found Namaqua Dove, Crowned Sandgrouse, Barbary Falcon, Spur winged Plovers, Common Teal, Shoveler, Tawny Pipit, Isabelline & Desert Wheatears, Zitting Cisticolas, Sedge & Willow Warblers so the opportunities at peak migration are fantastic. If we are lucky we may encounter some raptor passage which on previous trips at this time have produced Griffon Vulture, Steppe Eagle, Black Kite, Steppe & Long legged Buzzard, Montagu's & Marsh Harrier with an outside possibility of Eastern Imperial Eagle or Levant's Sparrowhawk.

Days 4 & 5 :- These two days will spent targeting our main species of the week, which occur in the deep south of the country on the Sudanese border. An early start will see us driving along the coast making several stops at potentially good habitats. Before long we will start encountering roadside White crowned Wheatears and possibly a Lanner Falcon or two. Before we reach our destination we shall stop at the coastal palm grove of Wadi Gimal where hoping the migrants will keep us occupied for a hour or so. We shall also have a good look out to sea as regular birds here include Brown Booby, Great Black headed, Sooty & White eyed Gulls, Crested Terns and even an odd Red billed Tropicbird. In the afternoon we shall check into the excellent Red Sea Diving Safari Ecolodge at Wadi Lahami run by 'larger than life Aussie' Ross McGrath, a very interesting and knowledgable host. This accommodation is adjacent to the Hamata Mangrove arguably the best place in the Western Palearctic to find Goliath Heron. During our search of the area we should encounter other species such as Striated, Purple & Grey Herons, Spoonbill,  Common & Spotted Redshanks, Greenshank, Greater Sandplovers, Whimbrel, Curlew, Kentish & Grey Plover, Common & Wood Sandpipers, Slender billed & Black headed Gulls, Common & Pied Kingfishers, Desert Wheatear  and .possibly African Collared Dove. The next day will be spent concentrating on finding Lappet faced Vulture at the border town of Bir Shalatein, a no-where's-ville place surrounded by acacia scrub and more acacia scrub. It is an unforgetable experience in itself entering this realm, travelling through miles of practically featureless stone desert hopefully stopping for a roadside Egyptian Vulture, Crowned or Spotted Sandgrouse, Bar tailed Desert or Hoopoe Lark on to Shalatein to check the Camel Market where the vultures can congregate in large numbers to feed on any spare carcasses. Being so close to Sudan it is always looking out for other rare WP birds as in recent years species such as Black Bush Robin and Black crowned Finch Lark.

Days 6 & 7 :- Our final couple of days will be spent in a similar vein to the first two concentrating on finding migrant species locally to where we are staying on our return from the south. Apart from checking the areas around the complex and spending time watching the sea we will also head north to where the Sinai is closest to the Egyptian Red Sea coast and it's associated islands. During the Summer months these islands hold many breeding terns & gulls and hopefully we shall find a few lingering White cheeked Terns along with another breeding speciality the gorgeous Sooty Falcon. The El Gouna Golf Resort is an up-market complex with many trees, bushes, water courses and lush short grass that are a magnet to birds migrating along the coastline. Here we will be looking for the scarce Striated Heron along with Night & Squacco Herons, Garganey, Purple Gallinule, Quail, Blue cheeked & European Bee-eaters, Roller, many races of Yellow Wagtail, Stonechat, Common Redstarts, Northern & Isabelline Wheatears, Pied & Spotted Flycatchers, Southern Grey, Red backed & Masked Shrike. It is also hoped there will be time to allow anyone to take a trip out on one of the many boats that offer a chance to see some of the fantastic coral reefs, which occur just off-shore. The explosion of colour one gets from the innumerable fish and other sea-life to be found below the surface of the water is a sensation not to be overlooked.

Day 8 :- Today we return to the airport for our flight back to Britain but if time allows we shall maybe make one last circuit of the complex or a seawatch from the local pier.
