Oliva Rama Holidays
Egypt-Red Sea Coast
February 20th - 27th Cost - ₤1050 (inc flights)
Leader - Julian Sykes
This is a fairly unique opportunity aimed at anyone wanting to go on a very relaxed low-key all inclusive holiday with their (possibly) non-birdwatching partners. Our base will in one of the many self contained resorts of Hurghada on an all-inclusive basis with excellent food, drink and extra curricular activities. The optional schedule will allow plenty of time to yourselves to use the many facilities within the complex or maybe go one one of the hotels diving trips. During the week we will be dividing our limited birdwatching time between seawatching, local walks and travelling to some of the birdwatching sites surrounding this coastal town including the golf course at El Gouna, Safaga Mangroves and the excellent local Water Treatment Plant for the best of the northbound migration. Midweek there will be an optional full day excursion to take the inland convoy to the historic town of Luxor, here we will spend the day visiting some of the most famous sites in Egyptian culture - The Karnak Temple, Valley of the Kings and of course the River Nile.

Day 1 :- Upon arrival at Hurghada Airport we will pick up the hire cars and make our way to the excellent Aladdin Beach Resort where after checking in we shall gather for refreshments at the beach bar and hopefully start our week with a few good birds that may include Osprey, Lesser Pied Kingfisher Western Reef Heron, White eyed & Sooty Gulls, Lesser Crested & Caspian Terns. During this time Julian will go through the week's itinerary and ensure everyone is comfortable with the complex's layout and meal times. That evening will be first of the excellent buffet meals that will definitely cater for all tastes followed by a visit to one of the quieter bars before maybe a game of pool or for the more energetic a spell of table tennis!!!. Days 2 & 3 :- We will regularly take a morning walk around the resort's grounds and local waste ground should produce our first migrants, which can occur in impressive numbers. We should find the ubiquitous Laughing Dove, Brown necked Ravens, Hooded Crows, White Wagtails, Sardinian Warblers, Bluethroats, Spanish & House Sparrows but we may also encounter Isabelline, Pied, Mourning, & Finsch's Wheatears, Red throated & Water Pipits, Eastern Olivaceous Warblers, Lesser Whitethroats and Nile Valley Sunbird. Further afield we will visit the Safaga Mangrove and it's nearby beaches here we have a possibility of finding the rare and sporadic African Collared Dove along with wetland species such as Western Reef & Little Egrets, Purple & Squacco Herons, Pintail, Redshank, Greenshank and Whimbrel. Along the coastline we shall stop at a few of the en-route beaches looking through wader, gull and tern flocks hoping to find Greater Sandplovers, Grey, Kentish & Ringed Plovers, Sanderling, Dunlin, Curlew Sandpipers, Little & Temminck's Stints, Crested Terns, Great Black headed, Slender billed & Western Yellow legged Gulls. We shall visit the Water Treatment Plant on the edge of Hurghada which is a little oasis on the edge of the desert on a couple of visits on our trip in January we found Namaqua Dove, Crowned Sandgrouse, Barbary Falcon, Spur winged Plovers, Common Teal, Shoveler, Tawny Pipit, Isabelline & Desert Wheatears, Zitting Cisticolas, Sedge & Willow Warblers so the opportunities at peak migration are fantastic. If we are lucky we may encounter some raptor passage which on previous trips at this time have produced Griffon Vulture, Steppe Eagle, Black Kite, Steppe & Long legged Buzzard, Montagu's & Marsh Harrier with an outside possibility of Eastern Imperial Eagle or Levant's Sparrowhawk. Day 4 :- Today we will have an optional excursion to Luxor in the Nile Valley where we shall hopefully visit many spectacular sights of this former capital, such as the wonderful Karnak & Luxor Temples, The Collosi of Memnon, and the Valleys of the Kings. If time allows we shall take a boat to Crocodile Island looking for such species as Striated & Squacco Herons Senegal Thick-knee, Marsh & Wood Sandpipers, Ruff, Purple Gallinule, Nile Valley Sunbird, Black shouldered Kite and possibly a genuine Egyptian Goose. Days 5,6 & 7 :- Our final few days will be spent in a similar vein to the first two concentrating on finding migrant species locally to where we are staying on our return from the south. Apart from checking the areas around the complex and spending time watching the sea we will also head north to where the Sinai is closest to the Egyptian Red Sea coast and it's associated islands. During the Summer months these islands hold many breeding terns & gulls and hopefully we shall find an early White cheeked Tern along with another breeding speciality the gorgeous Sooty Falcon. The El Gouna Golf Resort is an up-market complex with many trees, bushes, water courses and lush short grass that are a magnet to birds migrating along the coastline. Here we will be looking for the scarce Striated Heron along with Night & Squacco Herons, Garganey, Purple Gallinule, Quail, Blue cheeked & European Bee-eaters, Roller, many races of Yellow Wagtail, Stonechat, Common Redstarts, Northern & Isabelline Wheatears, Pied & Spotted Flycatchers, Southern Grey, Red backed & Masked Shrike. It is also hoped there will be time to allow anyone to take a trip out on one of the many boats that offer a chance to see some of the fantastic coral reefs, which occur just off-shore. The explosion of colour one gets from the innumerable fish and other sea-life to be found below the surface of the water is a sensation not to be overlooked. Day 8 :- Today we return to the airport for our flight back to Britain. |
